On a hot afternoon August 24, 79AD the summit of Mt. Vesuvius exploded with a freighting roar. A black river of ash and lapilli came out of the crater and ran through the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Glorious Pompeii was buried under over 20 feet of earth. Exploration of this once great city began in 1748 and today four fifths of Pompeii has been brought to light.
